Overview

The Extern Mentor / Coordinator supports the planning, onboarding, orientation, education, and integration of Externs within the model of care at Michael Garron Hospital.

The Extern Mentor / Coordinator:
- Supports training and integration of Extern s at the organizational and unit level
- Contributes to Extern onboarding and ongoing education and practice development within the boundaries of the extern role
- Creates, adapts and delivers orientation and learning resources, using various delive ry methods in accordance with organizational and unit policies/practices/guidelines
- Aids in the development, implementation and education of the extern role, in collaboration with the Supervisor for the externs and the team(s) they work within
- As sists Externs to become familiar with the work in their new area of practice
- Supports unit teams to collaborate with Externs to provide required patient care
- Provides an ongoing presence on the clinical unit(s) to support the ongoing education an d development of the externs as well as tracking and documentation of skillset achievement

This contract position ends on March 31, 2023 and will be extended for up to one year based on funding and will be confirmed during interviewing process.

Education

- Regulated Health Professional in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support required.

Qualifications

- Patient-centred approach to clinical practice.
- Demonstrates excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills
- Interest in and experience with mentoring, preceptorship and adult learning
- Previous experience as a preceptor for nu rsing students preferred
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and evidenced-based practice and practice excellence.
- Minimum of 3 years experience in acute care in medicine, surgery, complex continuing care, mental health, maternal newbo rn and child, and/or emergency areas, preferred
- Good work and attendance record is required
