From our newly renovated state-of-the-art Cardiac Catherization Lab to our inpatient Cardiac Integrated Unit, cardiology at Michael Garron Hospital is on the fast track to being a leading institution providing cardiac care.
Cardiology is a branch of medicine that concerns diseases and disorders of the heart, which may range from congenital defects to acquired heart diseases such as coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure.
At MGH, we have doctors that specialize in all services from angiograms, echoes, exercise and stress labs, pacemakers, heart failure clinics and paediatric services. Other members of our team include nursing staff, technologists, interdisciplinary members (dieticians, transitional navigators, occupational and physical therapy), administrative staff and cardiac triage office. The coordination of programs and services allow MGH to provide high-quality 24/7 care.
A physician referral is required for the following services.
Cardiac Catherization Laboratory: Our lab team performs cardiac angiography in order to assist in the diagnosis of coronary artery or valvular disease.
Non-invasive Cardiac Laboratory: Our lab team provides diagnostic testing to find out how the heart functions at rest and under stress. Testing includes: exercise stress testing, echocardiogram, electrocardiogram, cardiopulmonary exercise test and Holter monitor test.
Pacemaker Clinic: This clinic provides support for patients and families through the pre-operative stage of getting their cardiac device. We provide ongoing follow-up assessment and care for all patients in MGH’s catchment area. This clinic is run by a highly skilled advanced practice nurse.
Heart Function Clinic: This interdisciplinary clinic is staffed with highly specialized physicians, nurses and pharmacists. The mission of the Heart Function Clinic is to decrease emergency room visits and hospitalizations with close follow-up and the integration of community resources. The vision is to support patients and families through the course of their disease in a high-functioning, holistic setting.
MGH is proud to hold strong partnerships with Sunnybrook Hospital to enhance Cardiovascular Services and with Health Access Thorncliffe Park (HATP), which provides Thorncliffe residents with basic health-care services, health promotion, family support, counselling, and other programs tailored to the needs of the community.
The Begin Right. Eat. Play. Program, generously supported by a donation from the Lawson Foundation, is engaging young families in healthier eating and lifestyle habits to tackle the high rates of type-2 diabetes in the area.
Iqbal’s Halal Foods, founded 40 years ago, collaborated with MGH’s Chief of Cardiology, Dr. Mo Zia, to develop a plan for a healthy food aisle in the local store. Today, in partnership with Michael Garron Hospital, Iqbal’s shoppers can choose from a wider variety of imported products such as whole grains, lower sodium alternatives and other healthy choices
