#IamMGH tells the stories of our people. Meet Jackie Elliott, health records processing clerk at Michael Garron Hospital (MGH).
“I’ve been at MGH for more than 35 years and have worked in Health Records the entire time. It really feels like home here. When I started, most of our patient records were documented by paper. So we were filing, organizing and pulling charts and regularly in contact with the physicians to make sure they were completing all the documentation that’s needed to ensure patient care and funding.
As the years have gone by, many of our processes have gone electronic but there are still departments that use paper patient records. My role now is to manage the documents related to inpatient discharges. I scan, label and barcode paper records so they can be correctly entered into our electronic health information system. Patient confidentiality is very important and our work helps different healthcare teams deliver quality, continuous care to patients.
I’ve been with the hospital so long that I feel like I know Health Records inside and out. I’ve had the opportunity to help in different areas, like Release of Information, and to teach and train healthcare information management students who are here completing work placements. I love helping people not only in Health Records but around the hospital. I love ending each day knowing I have achieved something and that I’ve done a good job for the patients.”
