Dec. 7, 2020: Statement about arrest made in relation to hate crime incident on EllisDon's construction site from Sarah Downey, President and CEO of MGH

Sarah Downey

Message on behalf of Sarah Downey, President & CEO at Michael Garron Hospital

“Today, Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) was notified that an arrest has been made in relation to the act of hate that occurred on the EllisDon construction site at MGH in June.

I want to express my deepest thanks to Toronto Police Services (TPS), EllisDon and their construction partners for their joint efforts which led to this arrest.

The construction site at MGH has been the target of several acts of hate since June, 2020. While I am grateful to hear that an arrest has been made in relation to this despicable act, I hope anyone else involved in spreading racism and hate on the construction site are identified and prosecuted as part of TPS’ ongoing investigation.

Our diversity is our strength and I denounce any form of racism or hate in our hospital and in the community.

I would also like to thank the community for their ongoing support for the hospital and the construction workers who work here through their displays of anti-racism messages and information rallies. The community’s support has shown that racism will not be tolerated and that together we stand united against hate.”
