#IamMGH tells the stories of our people. Meet Sheena Disher, registration clerk at Michael Garron Hospital (MGH).
“I’ve been in healthcare for many years. I moved to East York a few years ago and had heard great things about MGH and knew I wanted to be part of the team. I was hired as a registration clerk in the Emergency Department (ED) and now have that role in Admitting.
We’re generally the first point of contact for patients so we’re helping to put them at ease and ensuring they’re registered efficiently and that all the information we have on file for them is accurate. We also do a lot of problem solving in terms of helping people get to where they need to be. It’s a little bit different every day and we’re constantly coming across new things.
In recent months, I’ve also been registering patients in MGH’s COVID-19 Assessment Centre. The work there is a lot more focused: people are there for a very specific reason and you have a very specific task to do. A group of us volunteered to lend a hand there near the start of the pandemic because they needed bodies. That was when the COVID-19 Assessment Centre had just been set up and a lot more was unknown about the virus.
I still get to problem solve there, which is my favourite part of the job. I like it when I can guide people in the right direction and help them find solutions. It usually makes people’s day a little bit brighter.”
