#IamMGH tells the stories of our people. To celebrate the expansion of the Moez & Marissa Kassam Food Court, we’re highlighting the people behind our food and retail vendors. Meet Matt Zafari, Owner of Subway at Michael Garron Hospital (MGH).
“My educational background is in engineering and I have a master’s degree in robotics, but my real passion lies in food. I’ve been the owner of Subway at Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) since 2009. I have seen many changes to the hospital during that time, including the opening of the Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre (Thomson Centre) and this food court.
I really pride myself on the reliability of my store. We are open every day, even throughout construction, holidays, bad weather and the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a good feeling to know I am providing nourishment for healthcare workers, patients, visitors and the wider community.
One of my favourite things about this job is the community engagement aspect of running a food business at the hospital. Talking to customers, whether they are one-time customers or returning customers, makes me feel good. I know I am doing my job right when I run into customers on the street, or in the hospital hallways, and they recognize me and say, ‘Hey, Subway guy!’
I love this new space for Subway in the Thomson Centre. It’s much brighter and the store is larger with a better layout to help us serve our customers.
I enjoy interacting with customers and hearing their comments and feedback, whether it’s good or bad. Come by the store, try our food and let us know how you like it!”
