#CountdownToThomsonCentre shares the features of Michael Garron Hospital’s (MGH) new Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre, also known as the Thomson Centre, which opens to patients, families and caregivers on January 23, 2023. Follow along as we count down to the opening by marking different milestones and highlighting the ways the Thomson Centre helps improve the care MGH provides the community!
This week, we’re highlighting the new inpatient rooms in the Thomson Centre.
The Thomson Centre will have 215 inpatient rooms over five floors, dedicated to mental health, general medicine and surgery patients.
Features of MGH’s new inpatient rooms
- 80% of the new inpatient rooms are private
- Double rooms have two separate bathrooms, one for each patient
- Every room has a bed and side table, a chair that folds into a bed for visitors, a wardrobe for personal belongings, large windows with natural light and patient-controlled lighting
- Mental health patient rooms were built using best practices in mental health design, and include lockable cabinets, weighted furniture, enclosed blinds and other features that help ensure a safe and supportive healing environment
- Medicine and surgery patient rooms have ceiling-mounted lifts, wall-mounted diagnostic tools and enhanced space to accommodate mobility devices
Benefits for patients and community
- Enhanced space: The patient rooms, team stations and visitor areas are large and spacious, with plenty of room to accommodate patient care and visitors.
- Bright spaces and views: Our inpatient floors have incredible views of the downtown skyline and Lake Ontario. Research shows that looking at natural views can reduce blood pressure and muscle tension, and also contribute to reducing anger, anxiety and pain.
- Improved infection prevention and control: Each inpatient floor has several negative pressure isolation rooms for patients who may be infectious, and all patients, even those in double rooms, have their own private bathroom.
- Cutting-edge technology: Some of the new technology MGH is introducing to inpatient units includes automated dispensing units (ADUs) for medications, mobile devices for staff and a real-time location system that minimizes the risk of patient wandering.
Other important information
MGH’s new inpatient units will be located on levels 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 of the Thomson Centre.
