Update from Michael Garron Hospital regarding external natural gas leak

Update (June 7, 2023 at 7:30 a.m.):

Road closures are now clear and the hospital has resumed all regular operations.

Update (June 6, 2023 at 3 p.m.):

Toronto Fire has completed their investigation related to the natural gas leak on the exterior of Michael Garron Hospital's (MGH) campus and is no longer on-site. Toronto Police Service remains on-site to support with redirecting traffic on the remaining road closure (Mortimer Avenue between Coxwell Avenue and Fairside Avenue).

We thank Toronto Fire, Toronto Police Service, Toronto Paramedic Services and Enbridge Gas for their swift response and assistance. We also extend our gratitude to our patients and community – as well as our staff, physicians, learners, volunteers and health system partners – for their patience and support.

Patients, families and visitors at MGH should be advised of the following:

  • All entrances to the hospital (including Coxwell Avenue, Knight Street and Sammon Avenue) have reopened.
  • The Emergency Department (ED) at MGH is fully operational and available to provide care for patients experiencing urgent and potentially life-threatening illness or injury.
  • Some non-emergent procedures scheduled at MGH for today (June 6, 2023) were postponed. Patients who were impacted were notified by their care teams.
  • Visitors may continue to visit patients at MGH. Please see our Visiting a Patient page for more information.
  • Please allow yourself more time to get to MGH. This is because there may be increased traffic due to previous road closures around the hospital. For the latest updates on road closures, please see the Toronto Police Operations' Twitter page.
    • In addition, TTC may be continuing to reroute buses around the hospital until all road closures are clear. To see the latest updates, please see “Live service alerts” on the TTC website and allow yourself more time to get to MGH.

Update (June 6, 2023 at 1:40 p.m.):

Enbridge Gas has shut off gas related to the compromised gas line. Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) continues to actively work with Toronto Fire, Toronto Police Service and Enbridge Gas to resolve outstanding impacts.

MGH remains open and continues to be a safe place to give and receive care. We thank our patients and community – as well as our staff, physicians, learners, volunteers and health system partners – for their support. Our teams will provide updates as they are available.

Patients, families and visitors at MGH should be advised of the following:

  • The Emergency Department (ED) at MGH remains open for walk-ins. Patients who need emergency care should access the ED through the hospital’s Sammon Avenue entrance.
    • Until the issue is fully resolved, patients arriving by ambulance to the ED are being redirected.
  • Some non-emergent procedures scheduled at MGH for today (June 6, 2023) have been postponed. Patients who are impacted have been notified by their care teams.
  • Outpatient appointments at MGH are not impacted and are continuing as scheduled.
    • If you have an outpatient appointment scheduled for today (June 6, 2023) and wish to reschedule it, you may do so by contacting your healthcare provider or care team at MGH directly.
  • Visitors may continue to visit patients at MGH. Please see our Visiting a Patient page for more information.
  • Please allow yourself more time to get to MGH and travel using Sammon Avenue where possible. This is because there are road closures around the hospital, including on Coxwell Avenue, Mortimer Avenue and Knight Street. For the latest updates on road closures, please see the Toronto Police Operations' Twitter page.
    • In addition, TTC may be rerouting buses around the hospital. To see the latest updates, please see “Live service alerts” on the TTC website and allow yourself more time to get to MGH.

Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) is aware of a natural gas leak on the exterior of its hospital campus and is actively working with Toronto Fire and Enbridge Gas to address the issue. At this time, some patient care may be delayed. Patients who are impacted will be notified by their care teams as soon as possible.

We are working closely with Toronto Fire to identify areas on the hospital campus where staff and patients need to be temporarily relocated on-site. MGH remains a safe place to give and receive care. Our teams will provide updates as they are available.
