Your mental health matters: 5 tips to help improve your mental health

5 tips to help improve your mental health

It is almost two years into the COVID-19 pandemic and adjusting to continuously changing public health guidelines has been difficult. If you’re struggling with your mental health, know that you are not alone. Here are five tips you can use to help improve your mental health:

1. Go back to basics

Our mental health and physical health are connected to one another. It can be hard to feel good mentally when your body doesn’t feel good physically.

Go back to basics and make sure you are eating well and getting good quality sleep. Try to choose healthy foods to fuel your body and have treats in moderation. Cut back on screen time before bed and try to stick to a consistent sleep schedule.

2. Move your body

Many of us are working from home and sit in one position for far too long each day. Moving your body will help increase your energy level and improve your mental health.

This doesn’t mean you need to break a sweat at the gym – gentle movements like practicing yoga, tai chi or going for a walk around your neighbourhood are great ways to bring movement into your life.

3. Stay connected with loved ones

Make an effort to stay connected with loved ones. Restrictions to in-person gatherings are tough on our mental health. Maintain meaningful connections virtually through phone calls, FaceTime or Zoom.

If you are suffering from Zoom fatigue from too many virtual meetings at work, consider meeting a loved one outdoors for a socially distanced walk or activity.

4. Set achievable goals

The pandemic has brought what feels like a halt to our lives. One way to improve your mental health and create a sense of moving forward is to set small goals which are easily accomplished.

Is there a book you have been meaning to read? Set aside some time to check that off your list.

Are you missing a sense of community? Sign up for a virtual class for something you are interested in.

Is there a park you want to explore? Pick a sunny day to visit.

5. Be kind to yourself

Many of us are juggling different roles at work and at home. It’s unrealistic to meet the expectations of everyone around you. Remember to be kind to yourself. Give yourself permission to focus on you for at least 20 mins each day to unwind and recharge.

It’s okay to ask for help. If you need mental health help, please visit Michael Garron Hospital's Mental Health, Addiction and Withdrawal Management Services or ementalhealth.ca. In case of an emergency, please dial 911 or visit your nearest emergency department.
