#IamMGH – Meet Sarah McLaughlin

#IamMGH tells the stories of our people. Meet Sarah McLaughlin, Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) at Michael Garron Hospital (MGH).

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to become a nurse. I recall sneaking into my mom’s room as a child to watch the show, ER. This sparked my interest in the medical field. I found the idea of helping others to be very rewarding and it quickly became my passion.

After graduating from Durham College with the training and education to be a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), I began working at Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) in 2009 as a nurse on our acute medicine floor. I worked there for three years before trying out a job opportunity at another major hospital, but quickly realized how much I missed MGH. I tried my hardest to come back and finally returned six months later, this time in the Stavro Emergency Department (ED). I’ve been here ever since.

In my role as an ED nurse, I assess and care for patients in various levels of acuity throughout the ED. I also help train new staff and mentor nursing students throughout the department. I work in multiple areas which include triage, the Child and Youth Emergency Zone and our different acuity zones.

The most rewarding part of my job is that I get to help people. I love what I do, I love my colleagues and I love the challenges that come with working in the ED. We get a wide variety of cases, so every day is different.

I’ve stayed at MGH for all these years because of the wonderful people. This hospital is a community, and it has become my second home. I met my husband here, had both my children here and made some of my closest friends here. It’s a comforting place to be and I look forward to my future at MGH.

I’d like to thank the MGH community for keeping it fun and being a family.”
